Use Shopify Magic to Generate Email Subject Lines
For E-Commerce Coordinators ·
What This Does
Shopify Email includes a built-in AI subject line generator that creates multiple subject line options for your campaigns — including A/B variants — directly in the email builder, without leaving Shopify.
Before You Start
- You have Shopify Email installed (free in the Shopify App Store)
- You're creating or editing a marketing email in Shopify
- You know what the email is about (promotion, product launch, seasonal message)
Steps
1. Open Shopify Email
In your Shopify admin, go to Marketing in the left sidebar → Campaigns → click Create campaign → select Email.
2. Start your email draft
Choose a template (or blank) and fill in your email content — product images, body text, CTA button. The subject line field is at the top of the editor.
3. Click the subject line AI button
In the Subject line field, look for the sparkle icon (✨) to the right of the field. Click it. A small panel opens asking you to describe the email.
4. Describe your email campaign
Type a one-sentence description of the email. Example: "15% off sitewide sale ending this Sunday — focused on driving urgency for last-chance shoppers."
5. Generate and review options
Shopify Magic generates 3-5 subject line options. You'll see:
- Direct/urgency options ("Last chance: 15% off ends Sunday")
- Curiosity-driven options ("This weekend only...")
- Benefit-focused options ("Save 15% before it's gone")
6. Select and optionally set up A/B test
Click the subject line you prefer. If you want to A/B test, Shopify Email allows you to set a second subject line — select a second option for the alternate version. Shopify will split-test automatically and report results.
Real Example
Scenario: You're sending a summer clearance email to clear out end-of-season inventory before restocking.
What you type/do: In the subject line field, click ✨ → type: "Summer clearance — up to 40% off while supplies last. Goal: urgency and FOMO."
What you get: Options like "Summer clearance ends soon 🌞", "Up to 40% off — today only", and "Last chance to save on summer styles." Pick the one that fits your brand or test two against each other.
Tips
- Add "no emoji" to your description if your brand is more professional — Shopify Magic defaults to including emojis
- The A/B test feature sends each version to 50% of your list for the first 4 hours, then sends the winner to the remainder — activate it for important campaigns
- Write your email body first, then generate the subject line — describing a finished email produces better options than describing a concept
