Use Shopify Magic to Generate Product Descriptions
For E-Commerce Coordinators ·
What This Does
Shopify Magic generates product descriptions directly inside your Shopify admin — no copy-pasting into external tools required. For e-commerce coordinators adding new SKUs or refreshing an existing catalog, it turns a 20-minute writing task into a 5-minute review task.
Before You Start
- You have a Shopify store (any plan — Shopify Magic is included)
- You're logged into your Shopify Admin
- You have the product name and key attributes ready
Steps
1. Open a Product in Shopify Admin
- Go to your Shopify Admin (yourstore.myshopify.com/admin)
- Click Products in the left sidebar
- Open an existing product to add a description, or click Add product to create a new one
What you should see: The product details page with an empty or existing Description field
2. Launch Shopify Magic
- In the Description field, look for the ✨ sparkle icon or "Generate text" button above the text area
- Click it — a panel opens on the right side of the screen
What you should see: A Shopify Magic side panel asking for context about your product Troubleshooting: If you don't see the sparkle icon, make sure your Shopify store is updated; this feature is available on all Shopify plans as of 2024.
3. Fill In the Context
- In the Shopify Magic panel, the product name is auto-filled from your product title
- Add keywords you want in the description — these are your SEO terms and key features: "stainless steel, insulated, 24oz, leak-proof, hiking"
- Optionally specify tone: Professional, Persuasive, Playful, Sophisticated, Empathetic, or Witty
- Optionally specify any special features to emphasize
4. Generate and Review
- Click Generate — Shopify Magic produces a 100-200 word product description
- Read it and look for: correct features mentioned, right tone, SEO keywords present
- Click Generate again for a different version, or edit the text directly in the Description field
- When satisfied, save the product
What you should see: A well-formatted paragraph description ready to publish Troubleshooting: If the output is too generic, add more specific keywords to the panel (e.g., "BPA-free, keeps drinks cold 24 hours, wide mouth, fits cup holders")
Real Example
Scenario: You're adding 5 new coffee accessories to your Shopify store and need descriptions by end of day.
What you enter: Product title: "Ceramic Pour-Over Coffee Set" | Keywords: handmade, dishwasher-safe, 400ml, pour-over, minimalist, includes filters | Tone: Sophisticated
What you get: "Elevate your morning ritual with our handcrafted ceramic pour-over set. Designed for coffee enthusiasts who appreciate the art of the slow brew, this 400ml set combines clean minimalist aesthetics with everyday practicality. Includes reusable filters, is fully dishwasher-safe, and pairs beautifully with any countertop style."
Tips
- Generate 2-3 versions and pick the strongest one — tone variations produce surprisingly different results
- Always add your product's most searched terms as keywords, not just feature descriptions; "hiking water bottle" will appear in the description when you use it as a keyword
- Use the "Empathetic" tone for health, wellness, and baby products; "Persuasive" for gadgets and productivity tools; "Playful" for gifts and novelty items
Tool interfaces change — if a button has moved, look for similar AI/magic/smart options in the same menu area.
